I was in a boutique in El Segundo a couple days ago, in between spending a little too much time with my family, and I was looking at a long black and brown dress that had the type of former-5th-grade-teacher-meets-African-princess pattern that I am really attracted to. It was thin and flowy which can be a nice blend for a long dress, but when I pinched the skirt and pulled it toward me, the sun shone right through it and I got sort of mad. It was nice to look at, but it was basically unwearable without a slip and come on, no, and I just don’t understand the thought process behind that kind of design. I checked the tag and it was by Free People, of course, and was something like two hundred dollars and then I launched into the typical rhetoric that goes on inside my head about how these bullshit companies are making such suckers out of their customers and how stupid The Consumer really is and I didn’t even get to carry on as long as I’d have liked to because the shop owner walked by me and said, “I really like the shirt you’re wearing, is that Free People?” and I got to say, “No, this shirt was two dollars at Nordstrom Rack.” And in that moment of perfect timing I felt like, yeah, I’ve really got it all figured out!

Then I took two steps to the left and realized, “I’m in a boutique, avoiding my family, and I just fooled one woman into thinking I’m wearing a Free People top when I’m not. If I think this is having it all figured out, I haven’t figured anything out.”
